Mission Statement

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states "Elementary education shall be compulsory." In the impoverished rural areas of India, however, basic education often falls by the wayside as families struggle to earn their daily meals. It is to be underlined here that though primary education has been made as one of the fundamental rights in India, it still remains a privilege to many children born in marginalized poor families. By providing scholarships, books, and uniform donations, the Deoki Nandan Education Trust strives to ensure that all Indian children have access to education.

India's rural areas have been left behind in the wake of high growth in cities. One cause of rural poverty is the inability for children in rural areas to obtain basic education. While schools do exist in rural India, many children are not able to attend because they are needed instead to earn money for their families by working in factories or fields. Without a foundation of basic education, these children are trapped in a life of hard labor and barely sustainable wages.

India is a country of contrasts and the international community is impressed by its economic and human resource, while others emphasize the dark facets of this country and condemn the poverty and discrimination endured by many of its citizens, in particular minorities and Untouchables (Dalits). Further sizeable challenges facing the government and people of India are a low job-creation rate, poor-quality public services and lack of access to them, as well as discrimination against women.

Figures reveal that India has the largest number of poor people in the world. Even today, 350 million Indians live on less than 1 USD a day, 47% of children suffer from malnutrition and in some states the proportion of women to men is a mere 793/1000. A quality education ushers in a lifetime of opportunity, helping to build a strong and diverse workforce and citizenry. Today, the need for a quality education has never been more urgent.

Even after more than 50 years of Independence, India still has the world's largest number of poor people in a single country. Of its nearly 1 billion inhabitants, an estimated 350 million are below the poverty line. More than 75% of poor people reside in villages. Poverty level is not uniform across India. Poverty is deepest among scheduled castes and tribes in the country’s rural areas. India’s poorest people include 50 per cent of members of scheduled tribes and 40 per cent of people in scheduled castes.

Women in general are the most disadvantaged people in Indian society, though their status varies significantly according to their social and ethnic backgrounds. Irrespective cost and culture, girls education is encouraged across the country till recently. However the situation remains same in the economically backward and poor rural families in India.

Analyzing the Indian society, there is a nexus between poverty and education. Nevertheless, this vicious circle should be broken with the increase in the level of basic education to rural poor of this country. Our approach is practical and aims at providing children, their families and communities with lasting support. For just over $1 a day, your sponsorship provides children in great need with nutrition, healthcare, education and protection.

When a sponsor chooses to be a child sponsor, he/she creates a special bond with a child from India who is in great need. He/she will make a huge difference to a child's future by providing their basic needs, such as nutritious food, safe water and health care, as well as the opportunity to receive an education, which is so vital in breaking the poverty cycle.

Sponsored children thrive in the knowledge that their sponsor really cares about them and their future, which improves their self-confidence and self-esteem. Letters, photos and gifts from their sponsor quickly become treasured possessions.

Sponsors too will find that sponsorship is incredibly rewarding for them. Through letters and reports, they can see the progress of their sponsored child and the impact they have created on his/her immediate community over the years, and know that they have made a massive difference to a child's life and future.

Breaking the cost of education according to the grades is as follows. The requested sponsored amount is towards education fee, school uniforms, textbooks and stationeries, and basic health care.

1. Primary Education:
a. Grade KG to 5th Grade $ 170 or EUR: 115
2. High School Education
a. Grade 6th to 10th Grade & 220 or EUR: 150

The educational expenses towards pre-university/intermediate/higher secondary education depend on the course the child prefers to pursue since this by and large determines the future stream of education as well. We believe in the intrinsic worth and dignity of every child and strive to create an environment of respect for children of all cultures, in which they have opportunities to realise their full potential.

Our program is designed to improve the lives of children, within the environment of their family and community. This means that we respond to the impact of poverty as experienced by children - by addressing their physical, emotional and social needs.
